Railway trains were toppled over. Rail lines were reported swallowed by great fissures. A coal partially collapsed.

Harbor facilities were badly damaged at Kushiro, a port city of 68,000, on the southeast coast of Hokkaido Island. Kushiro was the center destruction. Most of the dead were in and near the town, on Japan's most northerly island. Tidal waves down warehouses. The quake touched off 11 fires.

Opens Wednesday The United Jewish Appeal campaign in Jersey City will open officially on Wednesday night at 6 p.m., with the special gifts dinner in the Jewish Community Center. Louis Struhl, chairman of the special gifts division, and general chairman of the past three campaigns, will serve as dinner chairman. George Milstein is general chairman of the 1952 U.J.A.

campaign in Jersey City. Guest speaker at the first major function of the campaign will be Rabbi Charles E. Shulman, who is spiritual leader of Riverdale Temple in New York City, During World War Rabbi Shulman served as a Navy chaplain, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander, and saw active duty in the Pacific. Rabbi Shulman recently returned from an extended stay in Israel where he spent many weeks investigating the problems of the Jews both in Israel and countries from which they emigrated. Plans for the dinner were completed at a meeting of the U.J.A.

Nicholas Gerrity Nicholas Gerrity, 58, of 314 Sherman Jersey City, died at his home last night after a year's illness. Mr. Gerrity was born in Brooklyn and lived 20 years in Secaucus and Union City before moving to Jersey City four years ago. He was employed as an electrician by the Public Service Co. Surviving him are his wife, Mrs.

Edna Schmebes Gerrity; his son, Nicholas Gerrity: his daughter, Mrs. Edna Good; his brother, Edward Gerrity, and two grandchildren. The funeral will be from the Leber Funeral Home, 20th Street and the Boulevard, Union City, at a time to be announced later. Patrick S. Montgomery Montgomery, 77, of 1142 Summit West Englewood, died yesterday at Englewood Hospital.

He was a native of New Hampshire and a resident of West Englewood the past 44 years. Mr. Montgomery was a retired maintenance man. He was a communicant of St. Antstasia's Reman Catholic Church, Teaneck.

Surviving him are his wife, Mrs. Mary Montgomery; three sons, Charles, Henry and Francis, Montgomery; his daughter, Mrs. Agnes Wacha, and eight grandchildren. The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. tomorrow from the Clifford H.

Mrs. Ellen O'Dowd Mrs. Ellen O'Dowd, 75, of 469 Lincoln Palisades Park, died yesterday at her home after a long illness. Mrs. O'Dowd was born in New York City and lived the past 50 years in Palisades Park.

She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Marie Zimmerman, with whom she lived; son, Frank O'DRowd, and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be at a.m. tomorrow from the Kreusch Memorial Home, 449 Broad Palisades Park, with a requiem mass at 9:30 a.m. at St.

The auto was registered under the name of Dorothy Hamilton, 25 Fairview Closter. The Bergen County address later proved to be that of Mrs. Donald Hamilton's parents, whose is McDonald. The car surname. County license plates, however.

She was a native of Italy and lived most of her life in the United States. Mrs. Grassi is survived by her husband, Luigi Grassi; two daughters, Mrs. Lawrence Fruscella and Mrs. Edward Heymer, and two sons, Thomas and Louis Grassi.

Marsh, 43, of 848 Newark Jersey City, who had been on fleet reserve since completing 22 years of service with the United States Marine Corps June 30, 1949, died suddenly at his home Sunday of a cerebral hemorrhage, While on reserve status, Staff a special officer the Brooklyn Sergt. Marsh had been, employed as Navy Yard. During World War II, Staff Sergt.

Marsh participated in the Guadalcanal landing and also saw service on Cape Gloucester and in the Peleliu Islands. His military career also took him to Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua. Among his campaign ribbons and decorations WAS the Presidential Unit Citation with two stars. Staff Sergt. Marsh was a native of Clinton County, Ind.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Elza Trittipo Marsh; four sisters, Mrs. Lillian McCall, Mrs. Elsie McClane, Mrs. Ellen Dirks and Mrs.

Floyd G. Rendall, a son, survives Dr. Grim's Body Being Brought Here The funeral of Dr. George Howard Grim, 74, a retired Jersey City dentist who lived the past seven years in Minneapolis, will be held in about 10 days from the Tully and Hillyer Funeral Home, 48 Brinkerhoff Jersey City. Dr.

Grim died at 8:10 p.m. Saturday in Mexico City, Mexico. Dr. Grim died at the Hotel Del (Prado while on vacation with his wife, Mrs. Clara Grim.

He had ben ill 10 with. a heart condition, further complicated by pneumonia. A native of Doylestown, Dr. Grim came to Jersey City soon after completing his training for dentistry. He practiced in Jersey City 40 years, and had his office and residence at 695 Bergen Av.

when he retired in 1945. Upon retiring, he moved to Minneapolis, where he and his wife took up residence with their son, George H. Grim program director for the Minneapolis Star-Journal radio station and a former Jersey Journal reporter. Dr. Grim's son flew to Mexico City to join his mother upon receiving news of his father's death.

Mrs. Grim and her son are due to arrive in Minneapolis Thursday.
