There's no Fiat that I'd pay even $5 for. I've worked on far too many of them throughout my life.

That's OK, we each work with our own experiences.
I owned both a 128 and an X1/9 at different times, and worked on other friends Fiats. I had good luck with them, especially the X. I bought it new in 83. I had much better experience than friends with contemporary American cars.
One coworker was giving me grief about Fiat reliability while his year old Firebird was at the dealer again. He ended up dumping the car because no one could get it to run right for more than a week, while mine never even hiccuped in 12 years and 150K or so miles.

Like with LBC's, most of the ones I encountered that needed a lot of help were mostly suffering from serious neglect, not inherent faults.
The first car I owned was a '56 TR3 that was given to me by a high school friend because it hadn't run in several months and her parents wanted it gone from in front of the house. A good collection of worn parts and half assed repairs had finally stopped it.
I saw her and her boyfriend a week later, he had told her it needed an engine overhaul. I had it running like a champ with a very moderate amount of parts and lots of attention. She wasn't upset with me but the boyfriend got some serious stink eye.

Well, they were better than the two Simcas I owned, but not by much. My 2 year old 20K mile '71 Simca 1204 dropped two valve seats. My 61 Simca Aronde with 40K miles (which was given to me when I was 12 years old), burnt more oil than gas.

^ Simca! I forgot about those cars. A dorm buddy of mine at Ohio U. had one, a 1000 I think. This was in 1973 and it was an old rust heap, but that's what we drove back in the day. Most memorable time was when he came out to his car one morning and the gas cap was open. He suspected a girlfriend had dumped sugar in it. We pushed it over to the South Green parking lot which was always almost empty. Then he drained the tank, all over the parking lot! Pulled a fuel line and just let it go. Made a huge mess and we both got in trouble for it. He was always fixing something on that car. I had a 68 Austin America at the time, it was way more reliable. And that's not saying much! My 1968 Fiat 850 Spider was fairly reliable, it just didn't like the road salt and rusted in two.

I had a '74 Fiat Spyder. It ran fine. I never had any mechanical problems. The thing was I was glad I was an electrician that specialized in low voltage controls. If not it would have sat a lot. After finally just taking out the entire wiring harness and relay board from behind the glovebox and replacing all of it with stuff that worked I never had another problem. In fact I wish I still had the car.

What was the story behind the X1/9 name? Anybody know?

Internal project code.

The Fiat 128 was project x1/1 and the Lancia Montecarlo (Scorpion) for example is project x1/20

In Fiat parlance of the 60s, x0 projects were for engines, x1 were for private vehicles and x2 were commercial vehicles.

Mercury Lynx lo miles - $6,200 (Lakeside)

https://images.craigslist.org/01313_bVRj1jenJSC_0AE0ru_1200x900.jpg

That's a bit of cash for a fancy Escort wagon, but, I can't remember the last time I have seen a Mercury Lynx...

The Diesel was a Mazda engine. If I remember right a lot of the car was Mazda.

I never knew those we're so reliable. That Lynx in the ad seems like a great deal for the money, I would drive it.

A diesel '86 Escort hatchback was my first car. The only good thing about it was it got 35 MPG city/45 highway, at a time when diesel was around $0.95/gallon. Made it really easy to round up all the pop cans my friends left in the back seat and put enough in the tank to get through the week.

Beyond that, it was excruciatingly slow, uncomfortable, not particularly reliable (though not terrible, either, especially compared to some of the abominations my friends had), and pretty much the antithesis of fun. I don't hate it like I do some other cars I had (*cough*Cavalier*cough*), but if you offered me one for free I'd pass.

Asking $48.5 K and just needs a speedometer cable? Why not put the cable in, unless there is more to the problem than that.
So his guesses at how many miles on the motor are just that, nothing to back them up.
I have bought vehicles long ago with non working speedometer or odometer, even non existent, you ignore mileage claims and evaluate condition as much as possible, and make an appropriate offer.

Totally agree. I see used vehicles all the time that the seller claims was always meticulously cared for but has a couple of issues like one of the windows doesn't work or the windshield has a crack in it, etc. Or it needs an oilI change ASAP. I always think that someone who wouldn't do even cheap and simple repairs is very unlikely to have been doing relatively expensive maintenance during their ownership. That Mustang is a great example, seller says every last thing is new and/or fixed but they didn't bother with a simple speedo cable, something that when missing is very obvious and annoying to anyone driving it- on a nearly $50K car. Honestly makes the entire vehicle suspect to me.

Another possibility is the new transmission, which isn't specified in the ad as far as I can tell, does not have a speedometer cable connection, or an aftermarket speedo that doesn't have a drive cable input.
Back in the early 1970's I bought a Rickman Triumph road racer from the guy who had built it as a track bike. I eventually got it licensed for the road. A bike like that was quite unusual on the road at the time and drew a lot of attention from cops. One thing they kept trying to write me for was no speedometer. At that time there was no requirement to have a speedometer, the California Vehicle Code only said you couldn't disconnect one that was installed. The Triumph Bonneville engine/trans unit had no output for a speedometer, they used a cable from the front wheel. Mine had a different hub and wheel with no provisions for a speedo, so there was no way to connect one.
I had to point out that section of the vehicle code more than a few times, and thanks to the friendly CHP motorcycle officer who pointed it out to me.
I did think about rigging an airspeed indicator from a small plane just for fun.

There is a easy fix for a transmission not having a speedo drive.
Various manufacturers make a small electric motor that turns the VSS signal into a speedometer drive that can be mounted at the empty end of the existing speedo cable.
Engine swappers buy them often.

Interesting car. Though not $60k interesting.

The Renault Caravelle is a sports car manufactured and marketed by Renault for model years 1958–1968 in a single generation — as a rear-engine, rear-drive open two/four-seater designed by Pietro Frua of Carrozzeria Ghia, using the floorpan and engine of the Renault Dauphine.

In High School, a buddy of mine that was a Renault freak bought an early 60s Caravelle for $40, in fairly good shape. We had more fun modifying Dauphines by putting R10 and R20 engines in them, playing with suspension, and having Renault wheel centers welded into 7" x 13" rims. We also built single seater Off-Roaders with R10 running gear.

Umm, it’s ugly. Unique, but still ugly.

Yeah, that is a nicely sized car with a lovely interior, but very awkward body styling.

The price seems to be in line with that. I'd expect such a rare V8 Italian sports car (284 made) to sell for much more.

Doesn't seem out of line with what others are asking for them. Found one asking ≈$8,000 that had rust holes through the floorpan. My knee jerk response may or may not have been, "I can learn how to weld…"

I never drove one. Supposed to be pretty good drivers for the era, but who knows. I suspect that at this point it is per usual down to the condition of the individual car. I drove a 122 that was a piece of sh*t and a 123 which was rather lovely. My father had a 145 that was rather nice to drive, if not amazing.

My first father-in-law had a 444 that he gave to my first wife. It needed a water pump, fuel pump, the brake system rebuilt and the carbs rebuilt at the least. I was young and this was way before the internet so I couldn't find parts. I gave up. I see now that I could get most everything pretty easily. Just as well I guess. I would have ended up restoring the car for her.

To me 27 Grand was a great buy. That wasn't some halfass build - the cage, metal door trim, narrowed rear end, floor shifter - they saw the theme through, just the theme is not for everybody. I think it's awesome. And a blown big block is worth a chunk by itself, as are 6 sweet red leather Recaros. I'm sure the total build cost would be staggering.

When I saw it, I thought, parts car...building something other than that...
I wouldn't want or pay for that, but the parts look intriguing...'55 Chevy parts intriguing ...otherwise, what is the point of that build, except, unique ...

When the Fuego first went on sale here I was interested and took a test drive. As we were driving slowly across 3 rough railroad tracks the car died, it would not start. I looked up the tracks and could see the lights on a train engine headed to the track the car was stuck on.

The salesman and I jumped out and pushed the car off all the tracks about 20 seconds before the train passed by.

We popped the hood and the problem was obvious. One of the connections in the turbo flow had slipped out of it's connection. I shoved it back on but it was a loose fit, so I was careful to stay out of boost on the drive back to the dealer.

I did not buy a Fuego.

I was one of the fools who bought into the Motor Trend hype in 1984 and took home a Renault Alliance DL. That car spent most of the 6 months of my ownership in the shop- had I been smarter, I probably could have filed a SC lemon law claim against it. For a week's stay in the shop I was given a Fuego for a loaner. The cloth sunroof failed in the open position on Day 1, got that fixed quick enough. The fuel gauge was off by nearly 1/4 tank and I ran it out of fuel on SC Hwy 61- a good 15 miles from anyone else. I had to wait until a car finally came by and gave me a ride to town where I could call the dealership to bring me some fuel- the gauge still read more than 1/4 tank. Being a non-turbo Fuego it was not fun to drive at all. It was a decent looking car, but no way would I buy one after my week's experience.

I like these cars (yeah, I know- I'm in the minority, and I don't care) for several reasons:
1. I owned the Plymouth Sapporo version in the early 80's and rather enjoyed it.
2. I love how it torques off Challenger owners- just ask one about the 78-83 Challenger, sit back and watch the fun.
3. There's always my long-standing love for the oddball, and those big 4-banger Mitsus are no exception.

Having said that, this seller is either wildly optimistic or insane. $30K for a 40 year old Mitsubishi?

I had a plan to take 2 Chevy vans, cut off the right side and rear doors from one of the vans, cut off the left side and front and replace it with the other right side and rear doors. So you would have hinge doors on the front and rear, and sliding doors on each side making it a cool trailer.

Is "dihedral-hinged" a fancy way to say "Lambo doors"?

Lambo doors are scissor doors. Dihedral-hinged is what Koenigsegg uses but I can't see that being used on an RV, from the pictures they show it looks like what most people would call butterfly doors.

The door moves out and rotates at the same time. Lambo doors are boring by comparison.

https://jacksontn.craigslist.org/cto/d/gulf-shores-1979-porsche-924/7635065033.htmlOh man, the dog-leg 5-speed! Look closely at the top of that gear knob... "Just like Ferraris have!"

My aunt & uncle had a silver one of these. I was too young to drive it, but I rode in the back when my uncle and my dad took it out in the twisties in western Massachusetts. I had no idea cars could corner that hard.

A dozen years later, I would take the same corners approximately as hard in the '91 Miata, and be amazed to think that we could all have similar thrills in a car with Japanese-car dependability, that cost normal-car money, where the top also goes down.

I like it because this Ford Focus CC (Coupe Cabriolet) is as an oddball car in my book to begin with and being a diesel adds to its cachet. These were designed and built by Pininfarina. Too bad we didn't get them in North America but diesel cars won't sell here.

What I'd REALLY like is the BMW 330e PHEV powertrain in the 4-series convertible. The 4-series convertible gets all the other 3-series drivetrains, why can't I have the one that's quiet and all-electric for 90% of my trips?

Okay, what I'd REALLY really like is for the new 2-series to be available as a convertible, and then for the 330e PHEV powertrain to be available in THAT.

Okay, what I'd really REALLY REALLY like is this. I don't care that it's the least-powerful version made, I don't care that it's black inside and not tan. It looks clean, and it's less expensive than "the average new car in the US today." Part of me wants to sell the BMW and the Maxima, and the Ducati, and just come back from vacation driving this:

40+ year old Italian sports car, what could go wrong? :dunno:
I would have to consult the Thread Of Gord, which describes in detail (with pictures!) all the work he has done to his. I mean, how bad could it be? I'd have pictures.

I mean, the obvious answer is "everything - everything can go wrong." But it wouldn't be the first time, and by now there's a ton of expertise out there to solve everything that can go wrong - with pictures - and a lot of ways to keep it from going wrong again. Like, the short cam-belt service interval is supposedly partly because they used a non-thrust-bearing type bearing to locate the camshafts axially and not just radially. But the world has made progress in the 50 years since this engine was designed, and someone in the Ferrari aftermarket has worked out a way to reconfigure the camshaft mounting to give these cars more-typical 60,000 mile service intervals.

The Vespa is a good idea actually.
