Elvis' Cadillac is for sale: 1975 CADILLAC FLEETWOOD BROUGHAM (https://www.carandclassic.co.uk/auctions/1975-cadillac-fleetwood-brougham-ex-elvis-presley-nk7DNn)

https://img-s-msn-com.akamaized.net/tenant/amp/entityid/AASxDNd.img?w=700&q=60&f=jpg

It’s nice when a car has a bit of history, something that you can lose yourself to as you consume every bit of information available. Cars from Cadillac certainly fall into this category. They were an American benchmark for quality, for luxury, and for sheer finesse. They weren’t fast, they didn’t really know what to do when confronted with a corner, and they were not in any way, shape or form, frugal.

With documentation to prove, this Caddy was bought by Elvis himself September 26th, 1974 from Madison Cadillac Inc, via salesperson. A. E. Hooker. With optional extras of five Vogue tires [sic], a ‘full cap’, bonnet mounted ‘Goddess’ and a sunroof, it came in at $12,512. Bargain. Elvis would go on to use is for a short while, before gifting the car to his doctor in 1976.

You'll be able to import a German spec car I dare say for that sort of money easy. UK prices for mint MGFs of that age would be about £2000-3000 retail. Trade, private and auction prices will be a lot lower. I've seen project cars (usually needing HG) go for a few hundred. Probably a lot of markup by that importer.

Mid-engined. Like Mazda, MG put together FR, FF and MR prototypes. MR offered significant assembly advantages. Radiator is at the front, so the coolant lines between front and reat have to be checked. The K-series is a lean burn design; very efficient, but can suffer rapid HGF if there is coolant loss.

At the end, MG was working on fitting these with the KV6 used in Freelanders.

The Barchetta was a pretty car, and was on one of those Holy Land Top Gear episodes (Hammonds choice, it was the only one to really survive, which was a huge surprise to all). It was FWD, based on the Punto platform, so shares some bits with the Fiat Panda and ultimately the Fiat 500. Not particularly sporty. Zero motorsport.

Another Japanese import I see. The factory didn't build any RHD versions, even for the UK market, but some were converted.

If a Fiat from that era, it would be the Fiat Coupe Turbo. Instant classic, and a delicious engine,

That's a Legacy GT-B. Quite a lot of difference from the US spec Legacy GT. It had the upgraded struts, diff, BBS forged wheels and the 250hp twin turbo boxer. The US GT had none of that. So I get why that was imported. Though that ad reveals that importer is one of the bottom feeders that plagued the UK when imports went crazy 20 years ago (shifty types, who disappear as soon as the exchange rates go south). Low grade crap, with body damage.

Lunatic pricing for another MGF, this time in Wisconsin. Seems there will be a few of these dotted around the US soon.

If it was minor, he would have fixed it (if you believe everything else he says).

How about Michael Schumacher's old AMG C-class wagon?

https://www.bonhams.com/auctions/27526/lot/208/?category=list&length=152&page=1

A few years ago, we saw Dave Rawlings Machine in concert. This is what Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings call themselves when they play their louder more-band-oriented Americana music; they call themselves "Gillian Welch" when they play their folkier more-acoustic music. Dave Rawlings Machine had John Paul Jones, formerly of Led Zeppelin, playing mandolin on stage with them. At one point, when Rawlings was really bending the strings during a particularly raucous song, I wondered to myself if Rawlings ever thought to himself, ironically, "YEAH old man, lookit me go! Bet you've never seen it done like THIS before!" while he was jamming out next to one of Jimmy Page's former band-mates.

That's about how I would feel driving an ex-Schumacher street car.

Vacuum something something?

Cruise control related?

That car brings back memories...... my very first girlfriend lived 3 houses up from us, and in the early 80s her Dad got a new company car that looked just like that. Black & Silver 2-tone with the turbine alloy wheels. Our cars at the time were a copper Zephyr wagon and a brown LeMans sedan. Yechh. To 10 year old me that Mercury was about the slickest thing I'd ever seen. I doubt a Rolls Royce would have impressed me much more.

Oops, I stand corrected. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chrysler_Imperial#1990%E2%80%931993
The Imperial marque was again resurrected for the model years 1981 through 1983 with a Malaise era two-door coupe based on the second-generation Chrysler Cordoba platform. All examples of the 1981–1983 Imperial used Chrysler's 318 cubic-inch V8 engine. All 1981 Imperials came standard with fuel injection, generating power of 104.5 kW (140 hp) and 0-60 mph in 13.4 seconds, with a top speed of 172 km/h (107 mph).

Not much of an improvement.... :dunno:

Armoured ex-UK Government Jaguar, complete with "bullet hole" from a deployment to South Africa

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202201311964643?postcode=mk63bx&sort=price-desc&radius=1500&year-from=2001&model=XJ&advertising-location=at_cars&include-delivery-option=on&year-to=2009&onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=Used&make=Jaguar&page=1

This amazing Jaguar XJ8 is the 1st of only 7 of these cars ever made under a Ministry of Defence contract over 2001-2002. It was owned and operated by the Ministry of Defence as an Official Ministerial car during the Tony Blair era for transporting Government Ministers on official duties. It was converted by Jankel at a cost of 250,000 pounds. It is very rare for a car of this type to be offered for sale on the open market as most are owned by Heads of State and private security companies. This Jaguar is the long wheel base version fitted with the 4.0 litre engine mated to a 5 speed automatic gearbox, finished in British Racing green. It has just been extensively recommissioned and serviced and has covered just 30,000 miles from new. It is still covered by the Official Secrets Act. Specifications include full armour plating for cabin, fuel tank etc, special switch gear, fire extinguishers, kevlar mats, intercom, attention lights etc. Weight 3100 Kg. It still has a bullet wound in the rear left door window sustained whilst on active duty in South Africa. Only the outer layer of glass is damaged, the remaining layers are undamaged. No one on board was injured. What is difficult to fully appreciate from the photos and description is just how amazing this car feels. It is the closest you will ever get to owning a 'James Bond' car. It has real presence on the road and everyone who sees it is blown away by it. The car is available for viewing and a test drive in Johnstone Renfrewshire. I will email you more info and photos if you ask me. Although the car is a private sale with no warranty, I will always offer any help and assistance that I can to the new owner. This is special and complicated car, so if any problems do occur I will always be available to offer guidance and advise as I know this car inside and out. Next MOT due 18/08/2022, Part service history, Green, 5+ owners, £15,000

Fascinating detail on the armour plate additions, the fire suppression system, the blue lights.

Technically, if it is a Sabra, that's an Autocars Sabra that was designed with the help of Reliant (and the earlier ones were manufactured by them). Reliant later marketed an update of the car under it's own name using the name Sabre (not Sabra).

Yup, there's one in my family; it was my BIL's when he married my eldest sister, then he sold it to my other BIL to use as a shop truck for his trucking and mechanic business, then that BIL sold it to eldest son, then the eldest son eventually got hard up for cash and sold it to my smartest sister (unmarried). Though she later loaned it back to her nephew, i bleve it is still titled to her. Currently, i think it is a spare with iffy brakes in the back. It was the classic maroon and cream paint scheme. The cab was a bit small for me, probably worse for my even-larger BIL who brought it into our family.

Do the JCW actually have a 6 cylinder in them? I thought Mini was all 4 cylinders. If it really is just a starter (and not a timing belt/chain), unless it is the hardest starter on the planet to change $1,500 seems like a decent deal.

It does sound fishy. Nonexistent 6 cyl. $1500 starter change. I've changed an early 2000s Mini starter. Starter can be found for $100 to $200 and it's an hour job tops.

A sprit is a small spar reaching diagonally from low on a mast to the upper outer corner, peak, of a fore-and-aft four sided sail.

A sprit can be confused with a gaff. A gaff is a spar rising aft from a mast to support the head of a fore-and-aft four sided sail. The boat in this picture also has a bowsprit.

Slightly older Chevelles/Malibus, however, are a different story. They were cool even then.

No Reserve: One-Owner 1987 Honda Accord LXi Fastback (https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1987-honda-accord-2/)

Sure, looks in good shape, but it's a vanilla '80's Honda with 102K miles. Sitting at $6400 with a couple of hours to go. That's a lot of bananas for a non-collectible/non-low miles generic Accord. :dunno:

Seems like anything 'vintage' like that WITH NO RUST will get pushed into the teens at least on BAT these days.

I also place value on it being injected. My own '89 Accord sedan (dark blue) was still carb'd. If I never have to deal with a carb again as long as I live, it will be too soon. I'm even considering a new zero turn mower that is just stupid expensive but has fuel injection.

I had a newer Accord SE that looked LIKE NEW, no exaggeration, at 195k miles.

I realize I'm yelling at clouds but "when I was a boy" those early 70s Novas were a dime a dozen. Maybe even cheaper than that. So seeing what some are going for now is something I just cannot get my mind around for what was pretty much the crappiest car on the high school parking lot in the late 80s.

Slightly older Chevelles/Malibus, however, are a different story. They were cool even then.

Oh! But for us who were building fast street racers the first Chevy IIs which later became Novas were better than Chevelles or GTOs. Novas could be had with the same drivetrains but started out hundreds of pounds lighter and could easily be stripped down from there. And it didn't seem as sacrilegious to strip down a Nova since they were the lower model anyway. Remember, maybe the most popular Yenko conversion was the Nova.

For car nuts of that era that makes them very well thought of.

But you want a lightweight Nova, my buddy's Dad bought a brand new 1986 Nova for a long commute - THAT was a lightweight Nova!

The funny thing is I drive by a Suzuki car dealership on my way to/from work. It is probably time to take the sign down, it seems like the only cars on the lot they have are used and none of them are Suzuki. Their motorcycles and ATVs are still popular, they could have had the motorcycle dealerships sell Jimnys or work a deal with Toyota to put the Jimnys on their lots or even work with GM to revive the Geo brand.

Perfectly awful cars in the day- essentially a rebodied Vega, although originally intended to house GM's Wankel engine that never came to production. I always thought they were nice looking, but never really wanted one.

They were a bit bigger than a Vega. 5 lug vs Vega 4 lug wheels. A small block could be crammed in a Vega. Monzas came with a 305 that was tight but not crammed in. Regular sized 10 bolt rear end when the Vega had a smaller oddball rear end.

The Monza wasn't introduced before GM's Wankel effort ceased (rotary effort scrapped early '74, Monza released late '75). GM's Wankel engines were supposed to go into Vagas and Corvettes (3 rotor mid-engined) before the effort was scrapped.

I might just do that. Supposed to be nice Saturday. I'm not sure on Oklahoma registering it will be a problem. They're very lax. As long as its a motor vehicle, has basic safety equipment and a VIN I think Oklahoma will tag just about anything. I even used race with a guy that put headlights, tail/brakelights, horn and a made up VIN plate on a Sprint Car and they registered it. It was a blast to see go down the street.

When the Monza was on the drawing board they had planned to use the Wankel. It caught them with their pants down and force them to use the 4 cylinder and 262 smallblock. The Buick Skyhawk (same car) got to use their 231 V6 and 5 speed. Every one of these engines were really dogs. The V8 was way too heavy for the front end and only came with a 4 speed. Too bad the cars didn't have the underpinnings to make a good car, because they looked great.

I did go drive the Jimny. First thing I noticed. It's for short people. Fine for me as I'm 5'7". If you're 5'9" or taller it's gonna be cramped. Just like my SX4 was. I think Suzuki believes everyone is short. It's as comfy inside as I'd expect a mini-suv to be. It has a lot of get up and go for a small engine. I suspect it's geared pretty low. It's probably around a foot shorter and close to that narrower than a Wrangler 2 door. I took it on a residential street and made a u-turn with room to spare. Turns on a dime. It would be a really fun little car. I also talked to my long time tag agent and she said it can be registered in Oklahoma. I really like it but they are wanting $45,000 for it. I might forget about trying to pay the house off early if it was $25,000. But $45k no way.

I still find the registration to be weird, it has to be an import so am really not sure how they are getting around the 25 year old rule.

Oklahoma has really lax registration laws. There's all sorts of loopholes for kit cars, specialty cars, collector cars, etc. etc. etc.

For instance, I've registered a handful of barn finds without anything but an affidavit stating that it had sat for years without anyone touching it. Many other states would require an actual owner search.
